Hi! I'm Kristi Everhart, a 6th grade writing teacher at Lockhart Junior High. This will be my 9th year to teach at the Junior High, and I could not be more excited! I studied early childhood education at Texas State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with honors in December of 2005. Since that time, I have had many opportunities to work with students of all grade levels K-12, but my classroom teaching experience has all been on a junior high level. I have taught many different subjects, but my favorite subject to teach is writing.
Writing is my favorite subject to teach because it gives the individual an opportunity to really dive into their world around them. What do they notice and want to pay attention to? What inspires them? What do they want to think more about? And by asking themselves these questions and paying attention to the world around them in a more meaningful way, writers soon discover that they have this amazing ability to create things of beauty in a way that they never dreamed possible.
As a teacher of writing, I also practice writing on a daily basis. My writing has taken me to new levels of understanding about many things. One of my favorite things to write about is my experiences in martial arts training as it always teaches me something new. I love having the opportunity to be a STUDENT, and to experience the same joys and frustrations that my own students will have throughout their own education. Writing about my martial arts training allows me to reflect on my own experiences as a student and to take those experiences (whether celebration or difficult, frustrating things) and apply them to my own teaching life. It's really awesome to be able to share with my students that I too understand when things are difficult and don't get it "just right" on the first attempt.
As I live a writer's life, one thing that I encourage my students to live by is NEVER GIVE UP! as well as maintaining a "YES I CAN!" attitude. These two things, I believe, will help them achieve ANY GOAL that they want to reach in life. Writing provides an avenue for students to think through their world in a meaningful way, and together we will build an amazing community of writers who love having the opportunity to "notice" their world.
I look forward to another amazing year as we grow together as writers!
