On Tuesday May 16, 2017, nine cadets of the Lockhart High School’s AFJROTC (unit) TX-20002 had a chance to fly with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in a Cessna 172 at the Lockhart Airport as co-pilots and passengers. The Cadet Orientation Flight Program aims to stimulate student interest in and knowledge of aviation and aerospace activities.
After an orientation, cadets were grouped and provided the chance to serve as copilot and passenger. They completed a "before take off" checklist prior to flight. While in the air, the cadets had a chance to enjoy a special view of Lockhart from the sky. As copilots, they also had a chance to operate the plane. Everyone wore headsets and experienced the communication systems during the flight.
The cadets completed a "landing safety check" prior to landing, providing them the full flight experience. The hands-on learning provided the students a special experience they will certainly never forget. A special thank you to CAP Lt Col Mike Duc for giving them this opportunity to go flying, as well as Major Ric Cisneros and Master Sergeant Maurice Kennerly, Lockhart AFJROTC Instructors, for making the event possible.
